President's Letter

Most of you have heard about the theft of funds from our shelter by a previous member of our Board. We are working with the Orange County District Attorneys office regarding this matter and feel confident that we will soon be fully reimbursed all the monies taken from our shelter/society. It is a shame that this happened to us, as well as to approximately 12 other area non-profits. The current Board of Directors has implemented new guidelines regarding the handling of shelter/society money. These guidelines are stringently followed to hopefully avoid this from ever happening again. Like I said in a recent letter to the editor of a local newspaper, if someone wants to steal money, they will find a way, It is just a matter of time before they get caught. I guess there is no foolproof way to avoid theft, but we are now doing even more to avoid this from ever happening again.

Just so everyone knows, our shelter animals were not effected by this theft, and thankfully people still continue to contribute to us through the mail, at the shelter and through the donation canisters we have throughout the Goshen area.

The annual costs of running our shelter are around $80,000.00. We get funding from both the Town and Village of Goshen, but this funding is less than half of our annual expenses. The rest is made up from adoption and surrender fees, membership dues, fundraisers and donations from area residents. This is why it is so important that if possible, people attend our fundraisers and look to us if you are interested in adopting a dog or cat. We, as well as every shelter needs all the help we can get. We always need volunteers to clean, socialize, walk and groom our dogs and cats, so if the price of gas has got you going through the couch cushions digging for loose change, but you'd still like to help us, volunteering at our shelter is a great thing to do. I also believe you will feel better because you have helped a homeless animal feel better, so please call our shelter at 294-3984 and give us a hand.
